Jackson, Miss - Joseph Wayne Baxter, 38, of Gloster, Mississippi, was sentenced in U.S. District
Court today to three years of supervised probation and a $3,000 fine for killing a black bear in
Amite County, announced U.S. Attorney Gregory K. Davis, Resident Agent in Charge Stephen Clark with
the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, and Dr. Sam Polles, Executive Director of the Mississippi Department of Wildlife Fisheries & Parks. Baxter was also ordered to pay $3,000 in restitution to the Appalachian Bear Rescue fund and $10,000 to the State of Mississippi for the value of the bear. Baxter’s 2005 GMC truck was seized and forfeited, and $500 in substituted assets was paid for the rifle used to kill the bear.
